Chairmen Shaink and Herman called the meeting to order at 8:06 a.m.
Introductions were made and a welcome back greeting was given to all members from Dr. Shaink.
Roberta Gluck and Mike Kerner, EDP Consultants, GISD, demonstrated Career Cruising, the new web-based Career Planning/EDP software being implemented this year in the Career Planning process. Career Cruising is a powerful tool used to help students in career planning with the assistance of teachers, counselors, parapros, administrators, parents and business leaders. In Genesee County, all schools follow the grade level standards included in the Career Planning Model. Roberta shared training results, continuous improvement checklist information, and a summary of the features of Career Cruising. EDPs can be revisited and used throughout the student’s lifetime.
Genesee Intermediate School District Dick Shaink commented that he was very impressed with Career Cruising and the Career Planning/EDP process and would like to see it implemented at Mott Community College.
Mike Zelley commented that he would like to see the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce involved in the CP/EDP process.
Brian Pyles stated that Shiawasee RESD has been successfully using Career Cruising for three years.
Tim Herman suggested that a presentation of the CP/EDP process be made to business CEOs.
Tom Svitkovich affirmed the accountability of the CP/EDP process through the funding stream and auditing process.
Brian Pyles, Shiawassee RESD, presented letters for signature to approve three new CTE programs in the areas of Occupational Child Care, Welding and Accounting for the 2005-06 school year. Chairmen Shaink and Herman signed the letters for submission to the State Department for approval.
Gary Tower reported that the 2005-06 Career Initiative Plan was approved in July. District allocations will remain as originally submitted. Perkins dollars ($1.3 million) will serve special needs students in Shiawassee RESD, Flint Community Schools and the GASC Technology Center. Perkins funds will also be used to improve approximately 130 CTE programs in Genesee and Shiawassee counties.
Tech Prep dollars ($193,000) will be spent on professional development activities for CTE staff in both counties.
Curriculum development took place this spring and summer in the areas of drafting, automotive and entrepreneurship.
Sherry Bradish reported on the Tech Prep Regional Entrepreneurship Grant, which partners Genesee and Shiawassee counties with Mott Community College. The $66,000 grant supports curriculum development and integration of entrepreneurship lessons/activities into all CTE programs. A 30-credit-hour Entrepreneurship Certification Program has been developed by Mott Community College that will be aligned and articulated to high school courses.
Brian Pyles reported that business leaders/entrepreneurs have identified key duties and tasks using the DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) process. CTE instructors in the region met in August for training to integrate entrepreneurship lessons into their CTE courses/programs. Eleven lessons have been developed, placed onto CDs, and will be shared with all CTE teachers in Genesee and Shiawassee counties. A follow-up Entrepreneurship in the Classroom Workshop is scheduled for September 29 at Mott College being facilitated by Angela Egner, developer of BizE curriculum for students grades 6-12.
Brian also reported that entrepreneurship lesson plans and materials were presented to a large audience at the statewide conference in Lansing on September 16.
Brian, Gary Tower and Sherry Bradish will be presenting the Entrepreneurship Integration Grant curriculum and the Entrepreneurship Certification Program (Mott Community College) at the Career Education Conference in Grand Rapids,
February 5-7, 2006.
Mike Zelley informed the committee that he and Benjie Williams serve on the Governor’s Conference Committee where entrepreneurship has been a topic of discussion.
John Rhymes, Career Alliance, stated that Pam Loving requested that the Entrepreneurship curriculum be shared with the Service Provider Network and the Workforce Development Board.
