I.          Meeting called to order at 8:03 a.m.

II.        PUBLIC COMMENT:  Judy Wingfield from Employment Services Outreach Initiatives reported on outreach initiatives disability awareness training. She discussed her involvement with the Chamber of Commerce.  Mr. Zelley stated that he was proud of the organization and that there is a need for assisted technology in schools.

 

III.       ACTION ITEMS:

 

A.                 Approval of WDB minutes of January 24, 2003:  A motion to accept the minutes of January 24, 2003, as they were mailed was made by Mr. Lewis Driskell and supported by Mr. Jimmy King.

IV.       SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS – UPDATES:

 

A.                 Shiawassee Subcommittee: Ms Barbara VanTol reported for Mr. Gosaynie.  She mentioned Congressman Kildee’s visit, the search for a state director of Michigan Rehab Services and the Career Prep program available to youth in Shiawassee County.

B.                 Economic & Community Development Initiative:  Mr. Barry Bomier gave an update on the ISUS initiative.  Mr. Cal Wright introduced a representative from the Isaachar organization who discussed their on-the-job training programs located within the Bunche Community School.

 

Mr. Zelley acknowledged Ms Katie Wolf for receiving a gold and a silver Addy Award.

 

C.                 EAG Update:  Ms. Donna Burmeister reported for Mr. Gary Towers.  She referred to the Career Prep Program, the Tech Prep Program and the CT Perkins Program.  The Career Initiative Plan is being submitted to MDCD.  The grant is due April 2003.

 

D.                Family Independence Agency Update:  Ms. Denise Chambers introduced Sandra Weston who will be a liaison between all of their Workfirst providers and Project Zero.  She mentioned possible project cuts. She discussed the partnership with Career Alliance and Baker College.

 

Ms. Loving presented to staff member Dexter Thompson an award for perfect attendance for 8 years.

 

V.                 PRESENTATION

 

A.                 Summer SUNsations Video Presentation:  Ms. Margaret McAvoy, Director, Business & Corporate Services, Baker College of Owosso discussed the video shown.  She gave an update of what to expect this summer.  Mr. Zelley asked how was the project funded.  Ms. McAvoy stated through PAL monies.

B.                 Michigan Rehabilitation Services Update:  Ms. Suzanne Howell mentioned the nationwide search for a Director for MRS.  The current Director, Robert Davis, will be leaving the first of July.  She described MRS collaboration with the Flint Schools, Goodwill Industries and the Disability Network in working with minority male students. Mr. Zelley commented that Mr. Doug Stipes in Lansing is having a conference for that Tri county area to talk about the loss of labor and population.

 

VI.              PRESIDENT’S UPDATE:  Ms. Pamela Loving mentioned Ms. Margaret McAvoy’s presentation in Chicago.  She stated that the State has asked CAI to take a 10% reduction in their leases.  She described Motivating the Teen Spirit.  

 

 

VII.           CHAIR’S UPDATE:  Mr. Michael Zelley reported that Governor Granholm’s Challenge held at Mott Community College on January 30th and February 4th  was very successful.  He discussed Congressman Kildee’s visit and probable follow up.  Mr. Zelley asked Dr. Chow to discuss Motivating the Teen Spirit.

 

VIII.        ADJOURNMENT:  The meeting was adjourned at 9:35 a.m.
