WHAT IS YOUTHBUILD FLINT/GENESEE Youthbuild Flint/Genesee (YBFG) is designed to provide students between the ages of 18-24 the supports necessary to earn their GED and/or High School Diploma. In addition to their educational completion each participant is supported in enhancing their leadership and construction based skills. Counseling, career & job placement, and graduation supports are also components of the program. Participants will alternate their time so that 50% of their time is spent in the academic learning portion of the program and the remaining 50% is spent in the vocational learning. During the academic learning, students prepare for the high school equivalency exam, a high school diploma, post secondary technical training, or college. The vocational learning includes on-site construction training which results in building affordable housing for low to moderate income residents of Flint.
GOAL Create a “Home Owned Zone” by creating an environment where occupants of the area gain knowledge and assistance in moving from rental options to homeownership. Features of the homes will include universal design, visitability standards, expanded lot space and horticulture development.
SHORT RANGE GOAL The YBFG project will design and create a training program focused on under served youth; youth are considered between the ages of 18-24 years of ages. All applicants will be referred to some career development opportunity if they do not qualify for YouthBuild.
LONG RANGE GOAL Replicate the YBFG project concept as necessary to revitalize other neighborhoods in Flint and surrounding communities.
TO BE ACCEPTED INTO THIS PROGRAM YOU MUST BE:
• Interested in learning construction • Between 18-24 years old • Drug Free • Interested in further education		• Serious and Committed • Unemployed and out of school • A City of Flint or Genesee County resident
